D Smooth returns to Birmingham after taking 3rd place on The Voice competition

David “D Smooth” Mitchell is back in Birmingham after singing his heart out to the world on NBC’s The Voice. He didn’t take home the title, but winning the competition was not his goal.“My goal wasn’t to win the show. A lot of people just don’t know that. My goal was to gain as much publicity as possible. My goal was to make it as far as possible. I literally made it to where you can’t no more,” Mitchell said.For years, the Mulga native and Minor High School graduate spent his days singing in small venues or intimate events across Birmingham.He’s proud to have been on Team Kelly, representing the Magic City until the very end.”Every second they gave me a chance to say where I was from, oh I was going to tell them, ‘205,’ Mitchell said.Some of his favorite moments were spending time with his coach Kelly Clarkson and singing “Slow Dancing in the Dark” with her in the finale.Stay up-to-date: The latest headlines and weather from WVTM 13 “I knew what she stood for as an artist, but as I got to know her, and she got to know me, I was surprising her every week with something new I’d do,” Mitchell said.And now, it’s time to create his own music in the genre he knows the best, R&B.”I feel like that I want three songs or three EPs, straight R&B. I definitely want to do other music genres 100%. I definitely want to work with so many other artists,” Mitchell said.Some big-name artists he’s already shared a room with, like Kelly Clarkson, Chance the Rapper and Blake Shelton.WVTM13 reporter Magdala Louissaint asked, “So this is not the end of ‘D Smooth’? Mitchell replied, ‘No, ma’am. It’s just the beginning. Just the beginning. There’s more to come.’D Smooth wants to complete a few albums within the year. In that time, he wants to create songs in genres like country and reggae. He hopes to tour and perform on a big stage again.
