Men’s Hockey: Four Cadets receive CSC Academic All-District nods

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Four members of the Norwich University men’s hockey team received College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District recognition on Tuesday afternoon, as announced this week.

Seniors John Banovetz (Eagle River, Alaska) and Braedyn Aubin (Woodstock, Ontario), alongside graduate student Callum Jones (Burlington, Ontario) and sophomore Clark Kerner (Kansas City, Kan.), were among the Div. III student-athletes recognized by the CSC for their strong athletic and academic performances over the 2022-23 season.  All four were named to the All-District At-Large squad for the first time in their careers.

CSC (formerly CoSIDA) Academic All-District honorees advance to the Academic All-America ballot, with All-American teams slated to be announced on Wednesday, June 21.  The men’s at-large category comprises student-athletes from fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, tennis, volleyball, water polo and wrestling.  A maximum of five players can be nominated and each must have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher, be at least a sophomore in standing and have been at their respective institution for at least one full calendar year.  Additionally, nominees must be a starter or key reserve for their program by meeting playing-time minimums on the ice.

Banovetz carried a 3.92 GPA as a nursing major at Norwich.  A defenseman, Banovetz finished this past season with 17 blocks, including a season-high three against Elmira, while also logging a pair of assists in separate wins over Johnson & Wales.

Aubin was one of the Cadets’ primary face-off takers this season, winning 194 with a season-best 14 coming over Southern Maine.  Aubin also added a pair of goals this year, including the go-ahead, game-winning goal against New England College in the New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) Quarterfinals.  Aubin finished his time at Norwich with a 3.85 GPA as a management major with an accounting minor.

A two-sport athlete who also excelled in men’s lacrosse, Jones posted a 3.96 GPA while majoring in criminal justice.  A captain on the men’s hockey team, Jones led the team in blocks with 46, with five of those coming in a win over Elmira.  Jones added two goals on the year, with his last being the game-winning overtime goal to knock off Plattsburgh State in the Div. III NCAA Tournament First Round in March.

Kerner, who tied for the team-high in points with 19 this season, is a 4.0 management major.  Kerner tallied eight goals on the year, including the game-tying goal in Norwich’s 2-1 regular season win over eventual national champion Hobart in January.  The sophomore represented Team USA at the World University Games later that same month, and was also a semifinalist for the Joe Concannon Award, presented annually to the best American-born Div. II/III hockey player in New England.

Banovetz, Aubin, Jones, and/or Kerner will look to become the latest name from the Norwich men’s hockey team to earn Academic All-American accolades after Andrew Albano (Hamilton, Ontario) earned those plaudits last season.

The Norwich men’s hockey team finished the 2022-23 season with a 20-7-2 overall record, and saw their NCAA Tournament Championship hopes dashed in the NCAA Tournament Quarterfinals at Endicott College.
