Reports in Germany claim Bayern Munich are keen to offload forward Sadio Mane this summer and hope that Newcastle make an offer for him.

The 31-year-old joined the Bavarians last summer after making the shock decision to leave Liverpool. The Senegal star had spent six successful seasons at Anfield, racking up 269 appearances in all competitions. He bagged 120 goals while winning the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup and EFL Cup.

However, the African ace opted for a new challenge in the summer of 2022, with Bayern paying Liverpool in the region of £27m for his signature.

Things have not gone according to plan in Germany, with just 18 starts among 25 Bundesliga appearances.

He notched seven goals and suffered a knee injury in early November that kept him out for three months.

The former Southampton ace also missed the World Cup, returning to domestic action in late February.

There was also controversy off the pitch as Mane was fined and suspended by Bayern for allegedly punching team-mate Leroy Sane.

However, he did walk away with a Bundesliga winner’s medal after Thomas Tuchel’s men overtook Borussia Dortmund on the final day of the campaign.

There have been rumours about Mane’s future since early May, with a few clubs linked to the winger.

Chelsea have been mentioned in connection with the player, with Mauricio Pochettino said to be keen on the deal.

And Liverpool themselves have also been linked. However, it is open to debate whether Jurgen Klopp would return for a player the wrong side of 30.

Mane to Newcastle seems wide of the mark

Newcastle continue to be linked with many players following their elevation in status.

A return to the Champions League plus swollen coffers means they can both attract and afford top-name stars.

However, Eddie Howe has been careful to avoid signing superstars just for the sake of it.

The ex-Bournemouth manager has also targeted younger players who still have much to prove.

It is a policy that has paid great dividends to date, with the Magpies way ahead of where they expected to be in their progression.

While Mane is undoubtedly a class player who could still offer much to a side, it would be a surprise if Newcastle signed him.

According to Sport1’s Die Bayern Woche show (via Inside Futbol), Bayern want to ‘convince’ Mane to move on.

And they are ‘hoping’ that Newcastle will make a bid to sign him. However, the report does not shed too much light on whether the Tynesiders have actually showed any interest in the player.

Manchester United were also linked in April but that particular trail then appeared to have gone cold.

The unlikely connection then resurfaced a few weeks agio via Sky Deutschland.

Whether Mane would risk the wrath of the Reds fans by signing for their great rivals is another matter.
