Spurs face Postecoglou contract confusion; Liverpool encounter £60m Mac Allister mystery
One Liverpool reporter seems to know something about Alexis Mac Allister that no-one else does. And Ange Postecoglou is in at Spurs on some kind of contract.

What was the biggest story in all of football on Tuesday morning? There are plenty of options: Alexis Mac Allister to Liverpool; the ongoing Harry Kane transfer saga; the impending appointment of Ange Postecoglou as Spurs manager; Manchester City surpassing Real Madrid to definitely become the sport’s most valuable club brand; West Ham preparing to blow bubbles in an actual European final.
As it turns out, none of them fit the bill. The Sun website happily ignores those lines for this absolute doozy:

And this really is quite the journey, because in the second paragraph we are told that ‘there are no rules to stop Toon from bringing in one of the superstars on loan’. Which does not sound like they’re about to bring all three in at the same time.
In the eighth paragraph, it is acknowledged that ‘there will be fierce resistance from Prem rivals if Newcastle try to land a global star on the cheap’. And yeah, it does feel as though Arsenal or Liverpool might be a bit frustrated if one of their direct rivals are allowed to bring in any of two excellent players or Cristiano Ronaldo for nothing.
Then it is conceded in the ninth paragraph that ‘the league itself would take a dim view if the Toon looked to sign someone on loan without paying “fair market value”.’ And again, they might be onto something there.
At no stage is it actually explained ‘how Newcastle could loan Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo AND Karim Benzema after owners acquire four new clubs’, beyond it being technically possible, if not in the slightest actually feasible. But that matters not when you have your clicks and the graphics department gets to mock up a dodgy Photoshop of Messi, Ronaldo and Benzema in Newcastle shirts.
Post truth
The official confirmation as Postecoglou as new Spurs manager did thankfully replace that Newcastle transfer guff as the biggest headline. But one piece of information on the incoming Australian’s deal seems to have caught a few people off guard, if these stories from June 5 are anything to go by:
‘Ange Postecoglou will become new Tottenham head coach, here we go! The agreement on two year deal plus option for further season has been reached as revealed in the morning’ – Fabrizio Romano.
‘Although Spurs did not immediately respond when contacted by ESPN, sources have said Postecoglou has agreed terms on a two-year contract with an option of a third year and a formal announcement could come in the next few days’ – James Olley, ESPN.
‘Tottenham Hotspur are set to appoint Ange Postecoglou after agreeing a two-year contract, with the option of an extra season, with the Celtic manager’ – Gary Jacob, Michael Grant and Tom Roddy, The Times.
‘It is understood that Postecoglou will sign an initial two-year contract with Spurs, with the option for a further 12 months’ – Sami Mokbel, MailOnline.
‘Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou has agreed to become Tottenham’s new manager on a two-year contract’ – Simon Stone, BBC Sport.
‘It is believed Postecoglou has agreed a contract that could run for three years and that he has cost Spurs less than £5million in compensation, with an announcement being prepared’ – Matt Law and John Percy, Daily Telegraph.
‘The Aussie is set to succeed Antonio Conte on a two-year deal, with an option of another 12 months once a £5million compensation deal is struck with Celtic’ – Martin Lipton, The Sun.
‘Former Australia boss Postecoglou has now agreed to become Tottenham boss after being offered a two year deal with a further one year option’ – John Cross, Daily Mirror.
Two-year contract with the option of a third season, is it? Lovely. Oh hold on…

Postecoglou will, at some point, be confronted with the interminable Kane situation and have to decide whether he can be at all bothered with it. Sergio Ramos hopes to relieve him of that pressure.
The Paris Saint-Germain defender told the Daily Mirror:
“My advice is don’t turn down the opportunity to play for Real Madrid. It is a special club who know how to win.”

Does Dominic King of the Daily Mail know something everyone else has accepted not to be the case when it comes to Liverpool and Mac Allister?
‘Liverpool are on the brink of making Brighton’s Alexis Mac Allister their first summer signing and could have a £60million deal done by the end of this week,’ he writes in the opening paragraph of one story, adding in another that the deal will be done for ‘a transfer fee that will be north of £60million’.
It was widely reported on Monday that the fee would be ‘way less’ than that. Ben Jacobs of CBS Sports suggested the fee ‘could be just UNDER £45m’. How is there such a disparity?
