Tottenham have agreed a £17.2million fee with Empoli for goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario.
The 26-year-old is due in London this weekend to undergo a medical ahead of signing a five-year contract.
Spurs had been in talks for Brentford’s David Raya but were reluctant to meet the £40m asking price.
Ange Postecoglou’s side are also gaining confidence over a move for Leicester’s James Maddison, despite the Foxes rejecting a £50m joint bid for the 26-year-old and his team mate Harvey Barnes last week.
Newcastle, who were also said to be in the race for Maddison, have turned their attentions to a £55m move for AC Milan midfielder Sandro Tonali.
Spurs have been on the look-out for a keeper with Hugo Lloris, who has been at Tottenham since 2012, set to leave the club this summer.
Vicario is part of the Italy squad but has yet to be capped by his country. He impressed for Empoli last season and previously played for the club while on loan from Cagliari.
Maddison meanwhile has only a year left on his contract, meaning Leicester must sell him this summer to recover a sizeable fee.
Newcastle tried to buy Maddison last year though they are currently focused on signing Italian midfielder Tonali.
Sporting director Dan Ashworth and head of recruitment Steve Nickson held talks on Thursday with Milan executives and Tonali’s agent Giuseppe Rio at the Palazzo Parigi Hotel.
Tonali played for Italy U21s against France in Romania and his agent is expected to meet him on Friday to finalise details ahead of any deal being signed off and medicals taking place.
Boss Eddie Howe has identified the 23-year-old midfielder as his top summer target.
Tottenham meanwhile also want to sign a centre back with Bayer Leverkusen’s Edmond Tapsoba in their sights.
Burkina Faso international Tapsoba is a player that Tottenham have admired for some time and the 24-year-old is eager to join Tottenham.
