Martincova leads 2-1, but Tomova won the most recent battle in the ITF Zaragoza final this year. Rallying from a set down, Tomova defeated Martincova in three sets to win the final.

Viktoriya Tomova had rallied from a set down to beat Britain’s Eden Silva 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 in the first qualifying round, but she lost the second qualifying round to China’s Xiyu Wang 3-6, 3-6.
Despite the defeat the world no. 8 found a place in the main draw as a lucky loser.
The Bulgarian will be making her second appearance in Birmingham. She had lost in the first round on her debut in 2019.
Tomova record her first WTA 1000 wins this year, winning her opening round matches in Dubai and Miami.
She has however won just three main daw matches on the tour this year. Overall, she is 24-17 across levels and 1-2 on grass, having also lost in the first round in Nottingham to Elizabeth Mandlik.
Tomova had a 4-3 record on grass last year, which included a quarterfinal finish in Eastbourne, where she was a lucky loser.

Martincova Makes it Past Qualifiers
Facing Tomova will be world no. 122 Tereza Martincova, who made it to the main draw with consecutive straight set wins in the qualifying rounds.
Martincova defeated France’s Jessika Ponchet 7-6, 6-3 in the first qualifying round. She then beat Dayana Yastremska 6-3, 7-6 in the second qualifying round to make it to the main draw in Birmingham for the third time.
Martincova was a quarterfinalist in Birmingham on her debut in 2021, but lost in the first round last year.
The Czech has had a tough year this season. She is 1-9 at the tour level with her only main draw win coming in the first round of the Miami Open.
Overall the 28-year-old is 15-16 across levels this year and will be hoping to get into some sort of rhythm in Birmingham.
Tomova v Martincova Prediction and Tip
Martincova has produced better results on grass than Tomova. The Czech was a semifinalist in Nottingham last year and reached the quarterfinals in Nottingham and Birmingham in 2021, so she has won matches more consistently on grass courts than Tomova.
Although, Tomova won a close final between the two this year, Martincova will hold the edge on grass. Expect Martincova to advance to the next round.
