When will it rain again? Lancashire weather forecast for the week ahead after thunderstorms and flash floods
After weeks of glorious weather and the hottest temperatures of the year so far, Lancashire was hit by thunderstorms on Monday night bringing with it torrential rain
In the space of just two hours, United Utilities said nearly 40mm of rain fell in some areas resulting in the closure of several roads and a major supermarket due to flash flooding. Lightning also caused anguish for one home in Lytham after a strike caused their roof to set on fire.
As the clean-up operation continues today, Lancashire is forecast to see a return of the dry and hot conditions of recent weeks. Mercury levels are set to hit 29C in parts of the county on Tuesday (June 13) followed by highs of around 26C in the coming days.

The latest Met Office forecast shows the sunshine and hot weather will continue for the rest of this week before cloud moves in at the weekend. No rain or further thunderstorms are expected during this time and it will be next week before any more rain will fall.
The Met Office forecast for Monday (June 19) shows rain in the evening for Preston, Chorley, Lancaster, Morecambe, Accrington and Burnley. However other places including Blackpool and Lytham will have to wait longer for any precipitation.
BBC Weather’s latest forecast shows the county is set for a dramatic change next week with rain set to fall every day and cooler temperatures in the low 20s. It also predicts that most areas will be hit by rain from Sunday (June 18) and continue until the following Sunday (June 25).
Temperatures will go from humid conditions in the mid 20s this week to around 20C next week.
Met Office forecaster and meteorologist Simon Partridge said the worst of the thunderstorms was now passed and drier weather was expected going into the latter parts of the week.
He said: “We’ve got high pressure starting to rebuild over the course of the day and when you get high pressure that’s what gives us lots of dry, settled weather, like what we’ve had over the last couple of weeks.
“That’s becoming more established tomorrow and through the week so we will see a lot of the country (on Tuesday) be dry with sunny spells.
“The thunderstorms have gradually been working their way westwards over the last couple of days because the area of the warmest and most humid air has drifted its way westwards, as a result… we’re expecting to see thunderstorms across parts of western Scotland and Northern Ireland.
“A few heavy rain spells are possible and could see some heavy downpours so there is the potential to see 20mm-plus of rain over a couple of hours, so not as much as we’ve seen over the last couple of days but certainly enough that anyone travelling will have to be aware.”

Tuesday:
Largely dry with long periods of warm sunshine, though still a risk of the odd shower in the afternoon which may be thundery. Feeling pleasant in the sunshine. Maximum temperature 28 °C.
Tonight:
Settled with mostly clear skies across the region, perhaps with a few isolated mist patches developing here and there. Another very warm and humid night. Minimum temperature 14 °C.
Wednesday:
Any early morning mist quickly clearing leaving the region with plenty of summer sunshine and temperatures rising, however it will feel slightly more comfortable than recent days. Maximum temperature 27 °C.
Outlook for Thursday to Saturday:
Mostly settled with plenty of dry weather and long periods of warm sunshine on offer throughout the period. Feeling fresher than of late. A little hazier on Saturday.
Long range weather forecast for June 17 – June 26
The Met Office said: “Predominantly dry and settled. Increased risk of a showers for N Ireland, high ground in Scotland and into the far southwest by Saturday although if any develop, unlikely to be impactful.
“Temperatures again warm overnight and hot or very hot by day, likely cooler near the east coast. Light winds, but possibly becoming moderate along the south coast.
“Later, plenty of settled and dry weather, most reliably so in the north and drier than average overall. Some showers, or thunderstorms possible, especially at first; greatest likelihood in the south, less so in the north.
“Warmer than average overall, with the highest chance of this in the west with very warm or locally hot weather possible. Eastern areas, especially coasts, may however see cloudier, cool periods in a cooler northeasterly wind.”
