The towering goalkeeper spent three seasons at Turf Moor, including a loan spell at Peterborough last term as Darren Ferguson’s side reached the play-offs.

“I feel extremely privileged to be joining a club of this size,” he told the club website. “Coming here was a no-brainer for me.

“After hearing about the interest and then speaking to the manager and Joe (Prodomo) about the project, it was an easy decision.

“They were really projective chats and he told me about his vision for the club, so I’m excited to be on board.

“The fan base is a huge pull with great crowds week in, week out. Everyone I’ve spoken to who has played for this club says it’s a great place.

“It’s an intimidating place to come to and whenever I’ve been here before, it’s always been a really good atmosphere.

“I’ve been away with the family, but now I can’t wait to get going again and meet the rest of the lads ahead of an exciting new season.”

The 29-year-old trained alongside the likes of Nick Pope and Wayne Hennessey during his time in East Lancashire.

“We had a really good group and I worked very closely with some good goalkeepers,” he added.

“It was a great environment to be in and learn from the very best at the top of the game.”

Pompey finished eighth in League One last season – seven points off the play-offs despite an upturn in form after John Mousinho took charge in January.

The Fratton Park club are among the early favourites for promotion next term alongside the likes of Bolton, Barnsley and Peterborough.
