Xabi Alonso has confirmed he will still be in charge of Bayer Leverkusen next season after reacting to continued speculation over the vacant post at Tottenham.

The former Liverpool midfielder had been linked to the vacant head coach role at Spurs during the past month after working wonders in Germany.

Alonso has impressed in his first senior managerial position after he guided Leverkusen out of relegation trouble in the Bundesliga and into the Europa League semi-finals since his appointment in October.

With Julian Nagelsmann no longer a contender for the role at Spurs and Burnley boss Vincent Kompany signing a new deal earlier this month, Alonso remained one of the bookmakers’ favourites to replace Antonio Conte.

But speaking at a press conference ahead of Thursday’s Europa League last-four second leg with Roma, Alonso said: “I’m happy here with the team and the club.

“I’m not worried about my future.”

Asked by a Bild reporter if that meant he would still be in charge of Leverkusen next season, Alonso replied: “That’s correct.”

While Alonso’s comments appear to be fairly concrete, on the face of it much of what he has said is ‘standard manager speech’ in terms of links to another club.

It’s still thought that Alonso will jump at the chance of a return to the Premier League if one presents itself, and the Tottenham job appears to be sitting there waiting for it he wants it.

Tottenham could still Slot in Feyenoord boss

Feyenoord’s Arne Slot also remains an option, although he is deemed as more of an unfashionable option – despite the fact that he led his side to the Eredivisie title this season.

Indeed, the Dutchman has been tipped to make the move, if Spurs do come calling.

As noted by Feyenoord Pings, former PSV midfielder Ibrahim Afellay said: “If [Tottenham come in for him], you have to be a big boy to refuse.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if he goes then. Tottenham Hotspur is a great club, very different from Southampton or Aston Villa.

“At Feyenoord, Slot reached the maximum [by winning the league], he got more out than in. Do you expect him to reach the Champions League final next year?”

Tottenham are back in action on Saturday when they host Brentford in the Premier League looking to keep their sliding European hopes alive.
