Yorkshire seaside town named UK ‘best staycation’ spot is the best place in the world say holidaymakers
There are so many great places for a staycation in the UK, but one in Yorkshire has come out on top.
Robin Hood’s Bay on the Yorkshire coast has been revealed as one of the four best spots in the UK for a staycation and people couldn’t agree more. The other three are Tenby, South Wales; Port Isaac, Cornwall; and Windermere in the Lake District, according to ‘experts’ at Skips & Bins.
Some people have even dubbed the North Yorkshire seaside town, located near Whitby, as the “best place in the world” as others recalled how “gorgeous” it is – which makes them want to return every year.

Being ranked one of the best staycation spots in the UK I just had to head out there to see for myself, and wow do I agree. I don’t think there is a seaside town on the Yorkshire coast, or perhaps the whole of the UK, that is as charming and idyllic as Robin Hood’s Bay. The fact it remains untouched just adds to its quaint beauty.
Despite the fact the town itself is fairly small there is still plenty of shops, cafes and places to enjoy a drink or ice cream – the ice cream from Browns is divine by the way – and definitely a lot to see and do. The beach is gorgeous and doesn’t seem nearly half as busy as Whitby and Scarborough which I really liked.
But most of all I loved it because it isn’t commercialised, there are no big chains overpowering the town and it almost reminds you of how the world once was, boasting independent stores. For me, Robin Hood’s Bay is my favourite spot along the coast and if you haven’t been I would highly recommend a staycation here, if not a day trip.
Just be mindful of the STEEP bank you have to struggle back up on the way home.
Many people in Robin Hood’s Bay would agree that the seaside hot spot is one of the best staycations, with one person claiming its the ‘best place in the world.’ Here’s what they had to say:
One couple, who did not want to be named, said: “We’re actually staying in Whitby, we’re just here for the day but we were just saying how beautiful it is. But, we couldn’t live here because of all the hills and you could never build anything – all the buildings are the original so you would struggle to build anything new because you wouldn’t get machinery down here. A lot of the buildings, including the old police station are now Airbnb’s.”
Pat and Peter have been visiting since they were children, they are now retired, Pat said: “Its the best place in the world, we’ve been coming here since I was a child, it’s really great place to be. I grew up with it and it’s sentimental, it’s gorgeous
“We come every year we stay in a bit house further up [pointing towards the houses on the bank] in a family home that was owned by Peter’s family. We’ve spent many happy holidays here I had family here too in my childhood days, we used to walk along into the bay.”
Peter added: “It’s out of the way Robin Hood’s Bay and it reminds me of what life used to be back in time. My family lived here and we keep coming back. You’ve got to go to Cornwall to get something like this out of Yorkshire, there are some nice spots along this stretch of the coast but this is one of those places that just draws you back. Sleights is lovely too.”
John and Angela have also been visiting the bay for many years, they stay in a caravan site just outside the town. Angela said: “We totally agree [that Robin Hood’s Bay is the best staycation spot] we have stayed in a caravan site above Robin Hood’s Bay for years. We used to come here when my parents had a caravan and we would always come into Robin Hood’s Bay rather than going to Whitby because it’s quieter. It is lovely.
“There are plenty of walks and things to do, you’ve got Boggle Hole, the Cleveland Way and Cinder Track. We love it here, we love the atmosphere, buildings, everything.”
John added: “We park up at the caravan park and don’t have to leave, we go out to the bay and it’s lovely, we see all sorts. We were in Whitby the other day but didn’t stay long, we like the quiet so we left as soon as it started to get busy. I know Robin Hood’s Bay wouldn’t suit everyone but we love it.”
Another tourist, Steven Welter, had been visiting from Colorado, USA while taking part in the coast-to-coast. Steven said: “I’m here walking coast to coast but staying in Whitby so we are just going through. It’s a very nice town it’s quaint, the shops and all the nooks and crannies are nice.”
Steven has visited Robin Hood’s Bay a couple of times from America. He added: “We spend a couple of hours here when we come in and I like to take a picnic lunch up by the bowling field so that’s fun but people come in and stop in the cute shops, grab a bite to eat and enjoy the walk along the coast from Whitby. It’s a wonderful little spot to end our coast-to-coast trip.”
The skip and bin hire company said: “Located not far from perhaps [its] more famous neighbours Whitby and Scarborough, Robin Hood’s Bay is a picturesque, small fishing village on the North Yorkshire coast. Bram Stoker’s famous Dracula novel features scenes set in the village, and the unique layout makes it a must-visit location with plenty of B&Bs, hotels and holiday parks in the local area.”
It adds: “Camping is also an option in the area to experience first-hand what the area offers – just be sure to either take all rubbish home with you, or most sites would have facilities like 240-litre bins to prevent waste littering the area.”
