EFL fixtures released

The fixtures for the new 2023/24 English Football League campaign have been released detailing the season-long schedule for all of the clubs competing in the Championship, League One and League Two.

In the Championship, there has been a particular buzz around the three sides joining the second tier from the Premier League and Leeds, Leicester and Southampton have all been handed tricky tests on the opening weekend.

Further down the pyramid, Wrexham are set to resume their EFL journey after a 15-year hiatus at home, though there are mouth-watering clashes to look forward to right across all three divisions in the EFL’s first round of fixtures in August.

Leeds, Leicester and Southampton learn Championship opponents

Leeds will start life back in the Championship against old rivals Cardiff at Elland Road on Sunday, August 6^th and the currently managerless Yorkshiremen will hope to have a new head coach in the hotseat before they tackle the Bluebirds.

Southampton will feature in the first Friday night fixture of the new Championship campaign on August 4^th when they head to Hillsborough to take on newly-promoted Sheffield Wednesday in what should be a fascinating skirmish in the Steel City.

Both sides will have new managers at the helm following the arrival of Russell Martin at the Saints and the recent departure of Darren Moore from the Owls.

Leicester City meanwhile, also have to wait until Sunday afternoon to kick off their Championship adventure. The Foxes, now under the direction of Enzo Maresca, have been paired at home with Midlands rivals and last season’s beaten playoff finalists Coventry City.

Elsewhere, Sunderland – who will be keen to mount another promotion charge – welcome promoted Ipswich to the Stadium of Light in the Saturday evening kick-off at 5pm.

Michael Carrick’s Middlesbrough, who came within a whisker of earning promotion last term, start afresh on Saturday the 5^th of August when they take on Millwall at the Riverside Stadium.

Wrexham mark their EFL return with a home game

Down in League Two, Wrexham continue their fairy tale resurgence on Saturday 5^th August with a home tie against MK Dons at The Racecourse Ground.

The Red Dragons, who were purchased by Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney back in 2021, won the National League with a record points haul in 2022/23 and Phil Parkinson’s outfit will play Walsall, Swindon, Wimbledon and Barrow in their first five fixtures back in the EFL.

Notts County, who were promoted alongside Wrexham through the playoffs, start their campaign at Sutton, while last season’s League Two beaten playoff finalists Stockport host Gillingham. Relegated Forest Green lock horns with Salford in what should be an intriguing face off at The Bolt New Lawn.

In League One, relegated Reading – who are looking down the barrel of a points deduction – kick things off at home to Peterborough, while Wigan head to Pride Park to take on Derby. Northampton and Stevenage, who were promoted together last term, meet on the opening day, while last season’s League Two playoff winners Carlisle play Fleetwood at home.
