How you can enjoy kayaking, paddleboarding and other fun watersports at Nene Park in Peterborough this summer

One of the most stunning reserves in Cambridgeshire, Nene Park is beloved by locals for its stunning wildlife including forests and meadows as well as its access to the beautiful Nene River and Gunwade Lake.

If you’ve been thinking about trying something new this summer or maybe getting back onto the water again, then Nene Park just outside Peterborough is the perfect place to give some watersports a go. Whether you’re going as a group, with a partner or on your own, there are plenty of sessions you can book on the water at Nene Park.

Paddleboarding

Stand Up Paddleboarding is the fastest-growing water sport in the world and visitors to Nene Park absolutely love it! People of all ages, body types and skill levels can be up and riding in no time. Nene Park also has an SUP club where people who love to regularly paddleboard come together on the river.

Some of the sessions also require you to belong to the SUP club at Nene Park. If you are a beginner, it is clearly stated which session would be best to choose.

Kayaking

Kayaking is great fun for everyone and even if you’ve never done it before you can get out and enjoy being on the water. All the kayaks Nene Park uses are ‘sit on top’ kayaks. These have an open deck where the paddler sits, perfect for new paddlers and super safe.

There are four different options to choose from if you want to try kayaking at Nene Park:

• Craft Hire – Paddleboard, Canoe & Kayak – Starting at £15 per craft. Ages 5+. (No experience required)
• Craft Launch – Paddleboard, Canoe & Kayak – Starting at £10 per craft. Ages 5+. (BC membership required).
• River Trips – Paddleboard, Canoe & Kayak – Starting at £25 per craft. Ages 5+ (For competent paddlers)
• Canoeing Taster Session – Starting at £20 per person. Ages 8+ (Perfect for groups)

Canoeing

Canoeing is often described as one of the most accessible water sports in the UK. Even if you’ve never done it before, you can be gliding along on the water on the lookout for wildlife in no time. Canoeing involves paddling a light, narrow boat with a single-bladed paddle, canoes are perfect for exploring with the family.

There are four different options to choose from if you want to try canoeing at Nene Park:

Open water swimming

Not exactly a watersport per se, but it is great fun and completely allowed at Nene Park! Whether you want to try Open Water Swimming for the first time, improve your technique or train for an event, come along to Sibson Lake at Nene Park and join other like-minded people on the water.

The sessions available are open to all swimmers aged 12+ who are able to swim the 400-metre course unaided and are confident in open water. Under 18’s must be accompanied by an adult in the water at all times.

Other activities to do at Nene Park

• Archery – Engage in a fun taster session that includes a variety of games and competitions starting at £15 per person.
• Axe throwing – Experience that thrill of throwing an Angel, Tomahawk and knife in a safe outdoor environment with sessions starting at £15 per person.
• Wall climbing – Have a go scaling the 7.3m high climbing wall. Sessions start at £15 per person.
• Bushcraft – learn how to construct a shelter, safely light a campfire, use campfire gadgets and so many other exciting bushcraft skills. Multi-activity packages are available to book starting at £30 per person.
