Prestatyn Running Club members brave the heat in latest events

Alex Ryder, who deserves great credit for continually pitting himself against the North West’s top athletes, was certainly tested when he turned out in the 3,000 metres at the Trafford Open Meeting.

He started sluggishly but worked his way through the field and finished in a highly creditable 10.08.

And he felt even more uncomfortable in the 800 metres, recording a time of 2-24.

Steve Stocker was also up against some class runners in the Burtonwood Brook 10k in Warrington, much of which was off-road.

He finished 28th overall in a solid 18.55.

A large contingent from the club is also expected to turn out in the Fairy Freckled Cow trail race around the Alwen reservoir on Sunday (June 25).

Meanwhile, North Wales’ newest parkrun in Llangollen got off to a flying start on Saturday (June 17).

More than 240 people from as far afield as Cheltenham, Davenport, Derbyshire, South Wales and Merseyside turned up for the first 5k event along the former Ruabon – Barmouth railway track.

There was a 14-strong contingent from Widnes.

The winner in a brilliant 15.12 was Jack Pickett (Wolverhampton and Bilston), and the first woman home was Samantha Edwards (Red Rose Runners), who clocked 20.40.
