Sean Abbott pays emotional tribute to Andrew Symonds after his incredible 34-ball century

Australian all-rounder Sean Abbott stunned his own record performances after netting the fastest-ever hundred hit in English T20 cricket.

The Surrey player simply undid Kent’s bowling at the Oval in the T20 Blast competition by scoring a triple digit in just 34 balls on Friday night, equaling the competition record set by his late fellow great Andrew Symonds for Kent 19 years ago Middlesex had set up.

But the humble Abbott, who has quickly become a popular figure with county champions, went on to pay tribute to one of Australian cricket’s old heroes, shrugging: “I don’t think people would think in the same breath about me and ‘Roy ‘ should speak. ”

“I don’t think I’ll get much sleep tonight but sharing this with Roy he’s a hero of mine and hopefully one day we can have a beer upstairs and talk about it,” Abbott told Sky Sports.

It was an amazing stroke that included 11 sixes and seven fours, including 30 in the 17th over – 6-4-6-4-4-6 – against hapless fellow Australian pacer Kane Richardson.

Even more notably, the 31-year-old Abbott, who saved a difficult situation for Surrey after coming on 4:64, had never previously netted a fifty in 76 T20 innings – his best was 41.

Instead, his 110 points on 41 balls completely changed the game, taking Surrey to 5-223 before limiting Kent to 7-182 and securing a 41-run win.

“Need to have a word with Moises Henriques (his Sydney Sixers captain) at home – maybe I’m hitting too low!” laughed Abbott when asked about the change on Sky TV by a man who has played throughout the BBL 2022 season 23 had only 51 runs in seven innings.

“No, we have a top-flight team at home in the Sixers, so I can’t ask that we hit that much higher. I’m just thankful for this opportunity.

“We won’t notice that for a while. First (blast) game at the oval in front of home crowd (of 17,000), haven’t hit that well in a while, nice to go out there and make the best of it. I got a little lucky – but boy was that a lot of fun.”

Luck came when, after moving up to 6th and hitting his half-century with 23 balls including three sixes via George Linde’s long-on, he was dropped by the same player by Joey Evison when he had on 87 turned on.

But Abbott didn’t stop there and reached the milestone with two more straight sixes against another Aussie, Kent’s 41-year veteran Michael Hogan.
