Plymouth Township to consider proposal for new Meijer store

PLYMOUTH TWP. — Meijer, the Grand Rapids-based retailer known for its supercenters across the Midwest, is proposing a new location in Plymouth Township.

The company has submitted plans for a 159,000-square-foot grocery store, pharmacy and garden center on a 21-acre parcel located at 47500 Five Mile Road, west of Beck Road. The site, west of Home Depot, also includes a proposed 3,300 square-foot convenience store with a gas station.

The Plymouth Township Planning Commission will hold a public hearing at 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 21, at the township municipal offices, 9955 N. Haggerty Road, for residents who would like to speak about the proposal.

The planning commission will also consider a special land use application for the project. In order to grant special land use, the planning commission must consider six specific criteria. These include, for example, whether the project will be in harmony with surrounding properties, whether it will be operated in the best interests of public health and safety, and whether traffic flow in the area is considered.
